Story

The story

Fresh out of college, Flora returns home with a birthday cake for her mother, only to be greeted by a trashed living room and a demand: her younger brother Leo needs eight hundred thousand dollars for his wedding. When Flora has nothing to give, her mother slaps her and her father reasons and wheedles, and the medical report that slips from her pocket goes unnoticed. The doctor has told Flora she has three months left.

That night Leo brings home men in sharp suits, and a signed check changes hands. Flora learns she has been sold to old Mr. Bailey, the wealthiest man in New York, to live in his mansion so Leo can have his wedding funds. When she protests that she is dying, her family sneers and refuses to believe her.

Leo kneels with an apology and offers her warm milk; Flora drinks, and her body gives out. As her parents turn away, she understands what the family she loved has done.

Opening excerpt

Yet when I couldn't produce eight hundred thousand dollars, her palm cracked savagely across my face.

"Mr. Bailey is the richest man in all of New York! You should be on your knees thanking God he even looked your way.
