Story

The story

When a sharp-witted newcomer wakes inside a melodramatic novel, he finds Harrison Cole pressuring Nora Bailey in a hospital waiting room, trading her mother's critical care for her body. He steps in as Bennett Rhodes, the story's predatory third party, and offers a different bargain: he will pay every medical bill for Evelyn Bailey if Nora becomes his canary.

Harrison threatens that her mother's care at Cole Memorial depends on his mood, but Nora signs Bennett's contract, and his attorney Paige Sullivan pre-funds three months of treatment and warns the medical director against interference. Harrison vows to bring Bennett to his knees.

Only afterward does Nora read the clauses: she must stay enrolled and may sign no legal instrument without Bennett's counsel. Moved into a condominium near campus, she grabs a knife and demands to know if she can be bought by the hour.

Opening excerpt

"Your mother’s treatment against your body in my bed," he drawled, his voice dripping with that polished, toxic confidence born of too much generational wealth. "Fair trade, wouldn't you say?"

In the original book, this was the exact second Nora’s life went off the rails. It was the inciting incident of a vicious, slow-motion emotional car crash: years of degradation, a stolen kidney, and finally, a cold, bloody flatline on an operating table while Harrison wept tears of hollow regret.
