For six years, Stuart Markman has worried over every dangerous trip his girlfriend Vivian Zaslow takes. When she is left unconscious after an accident, he finds two hundred and fourteen wills she has left behind, each dated differently, and every one names the same beneficiary: her first love, not him.

Her assistant insists the wills were a habit before her extreme-sports trips, and that Vivian only meant to repay a dying man, Daryl Anderson, who once saved her life. Nancy Zaslow, Vivian's mother, slaps Stuart and blames him for the accident, while Vivian herself calls him the stranger and dodges every question about the will.

Then a photo Stuart takes of his own home appears on Daryl's page, captioned as a home of his own, and Stuart realises the man he has quietly funded for years is the same first love. He is left to decide what the promise between them has made of him.
