Story
The story
Mary has spent decades as a wife and mother, keeping house while her husband Arthur worked. At a Thanksgiving dinner meant to gather the family, she finds Arthur tending to Rachel, his high school sweetheart, and her son and daughter-in-law toasting the other woman as "Mom." Arthur asks for a divorce, offering half his savings, and her son urges her to stop dragging it out.
Then lines of floating text appear before Mary's eyes, warning her that Rachel's early-onset dementia will soon strike and that refusing the divorce would leave her an unpaid nurse. Mary agrees to the split, but demands the house as well, and the room goes silent. Her son slams the table, her daughter-in-law sneers that an uneducated, unemployed old woman deserves nothing, and Arthur insists he has been generous.
Mary holds firm, refusing to sign without the house, and soon finds the deed in her own name. Now her son wants the deed and her ID for safekeeping, and Mary must decide what her new life will be.
Opening excerpt
My son invited the whole family out for a big Thanksgiving dinner.
I spent the entire morning cleaning the house, then took the bus alone to the restaurant, only to discover that my son had also invited my husband’s high school sweetheart.
My husband, Arthur, a man who had never so much as touched dish soap in our entire marriage, was attentively buttering her rolls, cutting her steak, and making sure her wine glass was full.
