As I stepped out of the stairwell, Frank Campbell from Business Development reached out, caught my arm, and pulled me back behind the heavy metal door.

He kept his voice down to an urgent whisper. "Sean, HR held an emergency huddle twenty minutes ago. I heard Alyssa tell Garrett with total confidence: 'Don't worry, Garrett. That renewal won't be submitted before the seventh. I guarantee it.'"

"How did you hear that?"

"I was in the small conference room next door taking a video call with corporate. They were yelling so loud I couldn't filter them out."

"What else did they say?"

Frank hesitated, rubbing the back of his neck. "Some pretty ugly stuff, honestly..." He sighed heavily. "They said it was time you learned your place. Said you think the firm can't survive without you, and that you're not the only licensed architect on the payroll. Then they brought up Paige Evans—the new girl in your studio."

I listened in silence.

"They said Paige has an elite pedigree, sharp instincts, and that she's far more agile than someone set in their ways. Said they should just use her credentials for the bid."

"Use her stamp to bid the project," I finished for him.

"Exactly. That was the play. Just run down your clock, lock you out of the submission, and keep you from taking the spotlight. Sean, how the hell did you manage to piss off HR this badly?"

A dry, bitter laugh escaped me. "I didn't piss off HR, Frank. I got in the way of someone's family business."

I paused. "You know about the thirty-million-dollar municipal civic center bid, right?"

Frank nodded. "Of course. City procurement. We've burned through three hundred grand in pursuit costs already."

"Paige Evans is Alyssa Drake’s first cousin."

That was all I said. Frank was a seasoned veteran; he connected the dots instantly. His eyes flared with sudden shock, and he slammed a fist against the concrete stairwell wall.

"They're playing with fire! That's insane!" He caught himself, looking at me intently. "I kept my voice recorder running during the corporate call. It picked up their meeting through the drywall. It's a little muffled by my own audio, but you can hear them clearly."

A genuine smile finally broke across my face. "That's more than enough."

"I owe you one, Frank."

After parting ways with Frank, I drove straight down to the State Licensing Board.

When I returned to the office, I compiled Frank’s audio recording, the certified counter transcripts and surveillance timestamps provided by Harold Henderson, and a comprehensive timeline of the past twenty-five days. I packaged it into a formal dossier and transmitted it directly to the head of Corporate Ethics and Compliance at headquarters.

I CC’d the regional managing director, Mr. Patrick Palmer, and my studio head.

The seventh arrived. The final statutory deadline for processing the renewal.

The HR office was eerily deserted all morning. I didn't reach out, nor did I walk over to ask for updates.

At two-thirty in the afternoon, Garrett summoned me back to his office.

"Sean," he began, looking at me with cool detachment. "An anonymous tip was submitted alleging academic credential fraud regarding your master's thesis and licensing prerequisites. The State Board requires certified transcripts and third-party academic verification before we can proceed with your file."

My breath caught. My chest tightened as though my heart had missed two full beats.

"Who filed the report? Give me a name, and I’ll confront them face-to-face right now."

"It was submitted anonymously."

"Company policy explicitly states that compliance only investigates formal grievances with verified credentials. Anonymous claims cannot halt standard administrative operations."

He leaned back in his executive chair, utterly relaxed. "Policy or not, your renewal submission is temporarily suspended pending verification. Sean, you have two hours to produce certified proof from your university registrar."

Two hours. Obtaining sealed academic records from an out-of-state university in two hours was a physical impossibility.

I rested against the back of the chair, a wave of cold fury washing down my spine.

Twenty-five days of stalling. An obsolete client survey. An absurd demand for construction lifecycle records. And now, a fraudulent academic complaint.

Every single obstacle had been meticulously engineered to box me in until the clock ran out.

I stared at him, motionless. "All of this... for Paige?"

"What are you talking about?"

"Alyssa's cousin."

His expression twitched, a fleeting flash of defensiveness breaking through his mask. "This is standard risk management. Don't project your paranoid conspiracies onto HR."

Just then, the office door clicked open. Alyssa walked in, holding a leather folder. When she saw me, a smug, triumphant smirk played across her lips—the look of someone convinced they had finally delivered the checkmate.

"Sean, I'm really sorry," she said, her voice dripping with counterfeit sympathy. "My hands are tied. I tried my best to push it through, but your documentation simply didn't pass muster."

I kept my eyes locked on hers. "You submitted that report, didn't you?"

Her smile vanished, replaced by an offended scowl. "Don't make baseless accusations."

"Alyssa, don't you ever worry about what happens when corporate oversight actually steps in?"

She let out a quiet, mocking laugh. "You reported me to compliance two days ago, didn't you? Did headquarters do anything? Sean, I follow protocol. I’m not afraid of your reports."

"Is that right?" I said quietly. "Then let's see how that holds up."

Right on cue, the glass door to Garrett’s office was pushed open.

Two men in charcoal-grey suits stepped inside.

"Corporate Ethics and Compliance. Which one of you is Alyssa Drake?"
