Story

The story

Six years ago, Aria's family forced her to divorce Ryan because Felicia, the girl they raised as their own, loved him. Now she returns to the country and runs into her brother Blake and her ex-husband at a park, where Ryan holds her seven-year-old daughter Lily. Lily no longer recognises her and calls her a creepy stranger, while Blake kicks over her easel and change box, demanding she come home to clear Felicia's name before an award. When Aria refuses, the two men drag her into their SUV and back to the house she once decorated, now remade for Felicia. There she is given a dusty corner room and cold warnings from Mrs. Davis and Blake not to bother Felicia. Aria hides a terminal illness, enduring the pain and their contempt in silence, her only comforts gone.

Opening excerpt

My entire family forced me to divorce because the girl they raised as their own fell in love with my husband.

Six years later, I ran into my brother and ex-husband at the park.

My ex-husband was holding my seven-year-old daughter, and he asked me:

"Now that you're back in the country, why didn't you reach out?"

I looked at him, cold as ice:

"Want to buy a painting? Twenty dollars a piece."
