Story

The story

Brought back to the Carmichael estate in Connecticut, Harper finds herself inside a family of doomed villains: a cold workaholic brother, a mean-girl sister, and parents headed for ruin. She has just escaped rural poverty in Montana for Egyptian cotton and central heating, and she refuses to let this gilded ship sink.

Her new family greets her with suspicion. Serena, the fake daughter, weeps at the slightest slight, while Preston makes clear he recognizes only Serena as his sister, and Eleanor scolds Harper for her attitude. Undeterred, Harper revels in memory foam and goose-down pillows, eats with unapologetic joy, and shrugs off their horror.

A vivid dream reveals the truth: this world runs on a dramatic romance plot, and the Carmichaels are destined for bankruptcy and prison while Harper is shipped back to the farm. She drafts a rescue plan, starting with severing Serena's toxic crush on the male lead, and enrolls at St. Jude's Academy, where her schemes begin.
