Story

The story

Reborn into the day she and her sister Maya wait in a foster home to be chosen by New York's wealthiest man, Ava watches Maya point at her and offer her up to Marcus Vance. Maya remembers their first life, when she was the Vance adoptee and Ava built a tech empire from nothing; now she means to take Ava's "lucky" path and leave Ava the hell she escaped.

But Ava remembers too. Taken to the Vances' Park Avenue penthouse, she is tested, then trained like a successor: etiquette, art history, piano, French, equestrian, and nightly Bloomberg with Marcus. Where Maya wanted only luxury, Ava wants power, and she wins Eliza's devotion by asking for bedtime stories and vowing to be like her.

Maya believes she has stolen the golden life. Ava knows the family was never the luck; her mind was.

My sister and I were reborn on the same day: the day we stood in the foster home, waiting to be chosen by New York’s wealthiest man.

She pointed at me, her eyes wide with fake sincerity. "Mr. Vance, she's... she's my big sister. She's always looked up to you."
