Story

The story

Cecilia Miller speaks her first word at five, pointing at the boy next door and naming the number above his head. Two days later he dies. When she calls out a number above her grandmother, the family learns the truth: the figures she sees count down to a person's death. Her parents warn her to keep silent, but on her sixth birthday she sees her own number in the mirror: 1,095 days.

For three years her parents lavish her with food, clothes and attention, leaving her younger sister Lana behind. When the final midnight passes and Cecilia survives, the number turns negative. Her mother accuses her of lying for gifts, her father's patience snaps, and Lana asks why her sister will not die. The family begins emptying her room.

A phone screen reveals Cecilia's 1,095-day wish-list posts, and her parents take it as proof of a scheme. As her number keeps changing, she is dragged toward the bathtub.

Opening excerpt

Pointing at the little boy next door, I called out the number floating above his head.

“Two.”

My parents had no idea what I meant.

Two days later, the boy was hit by a car while riding his skateboard in the street.

He died instantly.

My parents dismissed it as a coincidence.

Then my grandma had a stroke and was rushed to the hospital. The doctor told us there was nothing more he could do.

“She won’t make it through the night. You should start making arrangements.”

I spoke for the second time.
