Story

The story

Three years after Daisy vanished on a family hike, her mother Sarah is certain the girl her husband David and his sister Michelle bring home is not her daughter. The face resembles Daisy, and David produces a paternity test, yet Sarah's instinct recoils. She takes the girl's image to the media and the police, but David has her committed to a psychiatric ward.

Then a stranger online tags her with a link to a secluded rural property. In the video, a gaunt girl mimics a hog, grunting and scrabbling for feed. Her face is identical to the missing Daisy. Sarah races to the Sheriff's Department, but the case is closed; David arrives, calls her unstable, and every officer watches her as if she were mad.

At home the girl calls her Mommy, wears Daisy's cracked yellow-crystal necklace, and even bears the heart-shaped birthmark. Her mother and Michelle insist she is Daisy, and every photo now shows this girl's face. Only Sarah feels the visceral revulsion, and when she tries to reach Michelle, the calls fail and messages bounce back.

Opening excerpt

My husband, David, and his sister, Michelle, brought a girl home, claiming she was Daisy, our daughter, who’d vanished three years ago.

The girl’s face did bear a resemblance to Daisy—maybe a five-point match, as they say—but a cold certainty settled in my gut. “David Miller,” I said, my voice flat, “I’m not so out of touch I wouldn’t recognize my own child.”

Yet, he swore it was her. He even had a paternity test report, but I refused to believe it.

I took the little girl’s image to the media, hoping to find her real family. I even involved the police.
