Story

The story

Ethan Vance and Chloe Carter have spent five years planning the perfect home, a promise they signed side by side on a hand-drawn floor plan. But at the walkthrough of the house, Chloe is absorbed in the interior designer Julian Brooks, debating endless changes while Ethan's mother seethes over the million-dollar heirloom ring she cannot yet give. Julian, it turns out, went to college with Chloe in London, and the chemistry between client and designer has long crossed the line.

Ethan's father is in failing health, and Ethan promised him he would marry this year. When he tells Chloe the wedding is set for Labor Day weekend, she dismisses it as a tantrum and slips away to review blueprints with Julian. Standing in the study, Ethan folds away the old sketch and quietly calls off the engagement.

Chloe refuses to take him seriously, but Ethan has already given her the date. The house is unfinished, and so is everything between them.

Opening excerpt

My mom’s face fell instantly.

Her hands shook with anger as she forced the vintage, million-dollar diamond heirloom ring back into her purse.

She turned to look at me, her lips pale with rage.

"That Julian guy is doing this on purpose! I knew he was trouble from the start. Who keeps changing a house design this many times?"

"Mom," I whispered, cutting her off. "Chloe’s parents are still in the room."

Everyone’s attention had been drawn to Chloe and me because of that cheap pipe fitting.

Then, their eyes shifted to Julian Brooks, our interior designer.
