Story

The story

On the day Mia Gray and Chloe Baker are meant to collect their marriage license, Chloe abandons Mia to care for her childhood sweetheart, Zack, who has threatened to slit his wrists. Mia, who has just been diagnosed with stomach cancer, calls to say she feels awful, but Chloe snaps that Zack is seriously hurt and tells Mia she might as well say she is dying too. Mia says nothing, because she truly has little time left. She decides to keep being good to Chloe and then die in front of her on the day Chloe loves her most.

After Mia collapses and wakes in hospital, Chloe is there with Zack, who questions how an athlete could faint so conveniently. Mia recalls the years she gave Chloe funding, office space and her own work, and the hand she broke shielding Chloe from a criminal, ending her own painting. Chloe calls her devotion voluntary and accuses her of emotional blackmail. Mia wonders whether Chloe would feel even a moment of regret if she knew, and resolves that Chloe should feel the same pain she does.
