Story

The story

Daisy Donaldson spent nearly ten years renting before she used her savings to buy a three-bedroom apartment outright and gave the deed to her mother as a birthday gift. Her mother handled the renovation, sending daily updates, and Daisy looked forward to finally having a room of her own.

But when the work is done, her mother refuses to let her move in. The master bedroom belongs to her parents, the sunny room is decorated for her sister Julie, and the smallest room has been fitted out for Julie's golden retriever, Duke. Daisy is told she can sleep on the balcony. Julie, meanwhile, is coming home amid a divorce, and their mother insists Daisy should give way.

In the apartment Daisy paid for, her sister and the dog each get a room, and she gets none. She nods, then turns around and sells it.
