The story

Emma's husband Mark keeps a tablet she idly opens one evening, and a WeChat notification reveals a group chat called "Veteran Mechanics Maintenance Station," where members trade boasts about test-driving vintage and new models. Mark's own messages crow about an '01 driven off the lot, while the family owns only a seven-year-old black SUV. A note in the tablet's Notes app gives his alt account and a password that is the date of their marriage license.

Logging in, Emma finds the chat full of car talk that reads like something else entirely, and Mark's replies grow bolder. A light-brown strand of long hair slips from his collar, and a scratch marks his arm. He claims a work dinner with Mr. Davis and a company retreat, but the gardenia perfume and the charges from "Midnight Allure" on their joint card tell another story.

When Emma confronts him about the charges, Mark laughs and calls Sam, the auto shop owner, to explain the name.

Opening excerpt

My husband had to work late, so out of boredom, I picked up his tablet to play a game. Suddenly, a WeChat notification popped up. It was from an account I had never seen before.

The group chat was named "Veteran Mechanics Maintenance Station," and new messages were pouring in:

"Test drove a '75 vintage model today. 1.6L naturally aspirated. The intake was incredible. Handled all kinds of high-difficulty maneuvers with ease.
