Story

The story

For her college graduation trip, Chloe travels to Lake Tahoe with her boyfriend Ethan and her best friend Maya. Almost at once, the pair are treated as the couple and Chloe as the spare: a tourist asks her to photograph Ethan and Maya together, a hotel clerk hands the double room's keycards to them and sends her to a single room at the end of the hall, and a waitress sets a lovers' platter between them while Chloe eats fries alone.

Over three days she is taken for the third wheel seven times and their photographer eleven times, and Ethan never once corrects anyone. Maya leans on him, wears his jacket, buys matching bracelets for the two of them, and keeps handing Chloe her phone. Chloe answers every slight with the same two words: it's fine.

In her room, she scrolls through the hundred and twenty-seven photos she took, none of herself with Ethan, and quietly changes her return flight to tomorrow.

Opening excerpt

While walking along the shore of Emerald Bay, an older tourist couple approached us with warm smiles, asking in broken English if we could help them take a picture.

After taking theirs, the older woman offered to return the favor. She gently pulled Ethan and Maya toward the wooden railing, gesturing for them to lean their heads close together.

Then, she waved at me, holding out her camera.

"You take the picture for them! The lighting is absolutely perfect right now."

I stood there, holding my own phone up. Looking through the viewfinder at the two of them smiling, looking…
