The story
Lola is an architect celebrated for her uncompromising perfectionism, yet three years into their marriage, the loft she shares with Elliot is still an uninhabitable draft. The kitchen has no exterior windows, the master bedroom stays cold and damp, and every plea for a skylight or a warmer room meets the same answer: the calculations must be redone when she has an uninterrupted block of time.
When a burst pipe forces Elliot to search Lola's archive for the unit's schematics, he finds a complete residential portfolio of eighty-seven drafted pages. The client is her junior associate, Simon. Every detail Elliot begged for is there in ink and watercolor, down to a niche for Simon's espresso machine and notes on his back pain and sensitivity to drafts. The approval date is Elliot's birthday.
That night, Simon arrives at the loft with a key on a brass sun pendant, and Lola installs him in Elliot's sunlit study. At dinner she picks the cilantro from his plate and serves the prawns that could stop her husband's heart.

I was never one to start domestic wars over floorboards and drywall, but over the years, I had asked—begged, even—more times than I cared to count.
