Story

The story

For twenty years, Natalie and Charles Davis built a child-free marriage, a choice he sealed with a vasectomy and defended against both their families. Then Charles brings home a seven-year-old boy, and Natalie learns the truth: he has been supporting another woman, Eleanor Kelley, who is pregnant again, and his mother Leah has been tending to her all along.

When Natalie confronts him, Charles refuses to abandon Eleanor or the child, offering only to move them all under one roof. Relatives urge her to accept it, and Leah floods social media with pictures of Charles's other family. Natalie tells the company lawyer to draft a divorce agreement.

Charles returns to find her by the window, her voice gone from crying, and pulls her into his arms.

Opening excerpt

After twenty years of a child-free marriage, Charles Davis suddenly returned home with a seven-year-old child.

When I dug deeper, I uncovered the truth: he had been secretly supporting another woman, and she was pregnant again. Even my mother-in-law, who should have been enjoying her retirement, had moved in with her, personally tending to her during the pregnancy.

I lost all composure when everything came to light and confronted Charles in a heated, heart-wrenching argument.

Relatives and friends tried to reason with me.
