The Price of a Piano: Erasing the Illegitimate Sister

When her father's old friend entrusts his daughter, Mia, to the family, Chloe watches her household rearrange itself around the newcomer. Her father dotes on Mia, her brothers spoil her, and even Arthur, Chloe's boyfriend, drifts toward her, replacing the duet he promised Chloe with a four-hand performance alongside Mia at the school anniversary gala. Chloe looks at the program, her name crossed out, and calmly ends the relationship.

At home the family sides with Mia, and her father warns that walking out the door means never returning. Chloe leaves anyway, taking a cab to a penthouse her mother secretly gave her on her eighteenth birthday, a place no one else knows about. She switches to commuter status at school, where Arthur grabs her wrist and insists nothing is going on; Liam Vance intervenes, and Chloe tells Arthur the real problem is that he chose Mia over her.

With her father's card and the one her mother left her, Chloe begins to decide what comes next.
