Story
The story
At the New Year's Eve family gathering, Dad proudly toasts Ryan's first-place finish in the civil service exam, boasting that he spent a hundred grand on prep classes and tutors. When Alex asks where that money came from—she was refused thirty grand a year ago—Ryan sneers that he told their parents not to lend it. She has just quit her job in Seaside City, and her mother orders her to beg for it back while her father smashes a bottle and warns that every penny goes to Ryan.
Alex carries a criminal record from a year ago, when her boss harassed her, she struck him with an ashtray, and her parents refused to lend her money for a lawyer. That record now threatens Ryan's background check. Aunt Patricia arranges a restaurant job for her, and the owner offers two hundred a day for endless labor. Sleeping on a narrow couch, Alex clings to one hope: an apartment she found online, to be signed once her paycheck arrives.
