Story
The story
In Lawson Village, every villager is a billionaire, and only the village guardian can call the names of the dead and carry their coffins to drive away vengeful spirits. When the Lawson Family matriarch dies, the guardian arrives before midnight with soul-calling incense, ready to send her on. But Vivian Lawson and her companion Noah Cole block the door, mocking the guardian as a fool and a freeloader, tearing away the sacred vestments, shattering the incense, and shoving the guardian into a pit to be buried alive.
The guardian warns that once the incense is broken, the path to deliverance is cut off. The vigil cannot exceed three days; the name must be called and the coffin lifted before midnight, or calamity will strike the Lawson Family. Vivian laughs, crushes the remaining incense underfoot, and boasts that her family fears nothing, not even the City God. Crows circle the mansion as the soil rises, and the guardian vows she will pay for her folly.
Opening excerpt
Because the sins of our ancestors ran so deep, only I, the guardian of the village, could call the names and carry the coffins to drive away the restless dead.
Give the departed a chance at rebirth, and their descendants a chance to live.
After the last old woman in the village died, I lit a stick of soul-calling incense as usual and prepared to recite the names and lift the coffin, but before I could enter, a woman and her bodyguards blocked me outside.
“Are you the so-called village guardian?”
