Story

The story

Adeline Cox's husband Stephen Delgado, diagnosed with severe depression, wants to go cliff diving to release pressure. When Adeline checks his parachute pack, she finds the chute inside is broken, and floating comments reveal the truth: Stephen packed two parachutes, one working and one broken, planning to fake his death and make Adeline believe she caused it. He has already sweet-talked her into signing her will, intending to take everything with Laura Swanson once Adeline is gone.

When Stephen jumps, he grabs the wrong pack and plummets into the forest below. Adeline calls the ranger station, but Laura, on duty, refuses to dispatch a rescue team, claiming they are busy saving a kitten. Learning Stephen survived the fall, Adeline finds him herself and calls Laura again, who instructs her to perform CPR on his fractured body.

Adeline follows the instructions, and Stephen's injuries prove fatal. As an ambulance arrives and his mother Athena Delgado shrieks accusations, Adeline kneels in apparent grief.

Opening excerpt

My husband—clinically diagnosed with severe depression—wanted to go cliff diving with a parachute to "release some pressure."

But when I checked his parachute pack, I discovered the chute inside was broken.

I was about to stop him in a panic when I saw the on-screen comments flash before my eyes.

[Actually, the male lead packed two parachutes—one working, one broken. He'll deploy the good one once he's out of the female villain's line of sight.
