Story
The story
Michael learns that his wife Olivia has been swept away by a mudslide during a company retreat. But when he opens the safe she never told him about, he finds the company seal, property deeds, and a loan agreement issued that very day — and realizes the death was staged. In his previous life he spent twenty years repaying her debts and raising her family, only to watch her return with another man at the end of his life.
This time Michael stays calm. He empties the safe, changes its password, and leaves trusted people to guard the house while he plays along with Olivia's parents and brother, who are dressed for a trip rather than a rescue. Olivia, hidden behind a mask, finds the villa watched and cannot reach the documents she needs to mortgage the house and drain the company.
She refuses to give up, certain that sooner or later the guards will slip, while Michael is equally determined that this time she will not walk away with anything.
Opening excerpt
In my previous life, my wife died in a mudslide during her company retreat.
I rushed to the disaster site and searched for half a month, but I never found my wife’s body, so I could only build a memorial grave for her.
Before I even had time to grieve, the bank began calling to demand repayment, and I learned that my wife had taken out a massive loan to help her company grow.
I was the sole heir to her estate.
