Good Riddance!

On New Year's Eve, Shirley is working overtime at the mall when her boyfriend of six years, Joel Whitaker, proposes on the biggest screen to Esther Jones, the student whose scholarship her family funds. Esther accepts, calling it romantic to be confessed to in her own family's estate, and the crowd cheers as the couple wins the Best Couple Award.

Shirley does not cry or make a scene. She volunteers to hand them their prize, then calmly tells Joel she is done with him. Joel accuses her of following him and of being suffocating, while Esther plays the innocent, asking Shirley not to overthink a little wish of hers.

When Shirley demands her ring back, Esther throws it into the bushes, and Joel calls it a cheap knockoff. After Shirley slaps him, Joel claims she is nothing but the charity case Esther's family sponsored, and Esther asks why Shirley never told Joel the truth.
