Story

The story

On the day before New Year's Eve, a girl leaves a window ajar and her little sister sneezes. Her parents drive her out into the wind and snow to gather firewood. In the mountains she finds an injured man, Zayne White, trapped between rocks, and drags him home on her back. Her family ignores her, takes his bracelet for her sister, and lets him stay only for money; she alone gives him cold soup and her bed in the shed.

Before dawn she goes out again to chop wood and finds a woman in the snow, Emma Clark, separated from her friends. The girl offers to take her in, but only if Emma becomes her mom and carries her away from a house where her parents, her grandma and her sister keep all their love for the lively one.

Opening excerpt

My parents kicked me out and ordered me to collect firewood in the dark.

Inside, the family crowded around her, laughing as they handed her presents.

I didn't cry or make a scene. Instead, I slung the basket onto my back before heading into the mountains through the wind and snow.

I didn't find any firewood. I found a man instead.

His leg was wedged in a crack between rocks, bloody enough to scare me.
