No More Free Rides

Jennifer Smith has spent three years quietly paying out of her own pocket for two shuttle vans that carry her coworkers to and from the office, plus giving her neighbor and colleague Selena Rogers a daily ride. When a storm hits, Jennifer refuses Selena's demand to detour to the Elmwood Mall to collect her boyfriend Ryan, and drives home instead to bring medicine to her mother.

The next morning, Selena files a complaint accusing Jennifer of misusing her personal vehicle for unauthorized commercial activity. Administrative Manager Wade Cooper fines her, issues a formal warning and revokes her quarterly bonus. Jennifer accepts the decision calmly, then calls Mr. Wallace to cancel the leases on both vans, revealing that the shuttle service everyone treated as a company benefit was funded entirely by her, at over twenty thousand a month.

As the office empties at five-thirty and no shuttle appears, her coworkers turn on her, insisting she has no right to cancel a benefit they believe the company provides.
