Story

The story

Damien Hawthorne, the wealthiest man in New York, is drugged by a business rival and sleeps with a college student named Chloe. He calls his wife Elara to confess and says he has paid the woman off. Elara chooses to believe it was an accident, but Chloe returns, and after an earthquake on the southern coast she claws Damien from the rubble and is found to be pregnant. Damien refuses to divorce Elara yet insists he must take responsibility for Chloe, so Elara leaves for a mountain sanctuary.

When Damien's parents demand she return for the birth of twins, Elara finds the Hawthorne estate celebrating and herself treated as an intruder. Chloe stages a fall that injures one infant, and Damien blames Elara, sending her to Blackwood Manor. There Elara finally sends the message she should have sent months ago: she wants a divorce. Damien refuses, but when Chloe calls about the fevered baby, he rushes away, leaving Elara alone with her decision.

Opening excerpt

My husband, Damien Hawthorne, the wealthiest man in New York, was drugged. He slept with a college student.

The moment he came to his senses, he called me. His voice was a raw, panicked rasp.

"Elara, I was drugged. I made a mistake. But I paid her off. She won't be a problem."

After eight years of a storybook marriage, I chose to believe it was just a terrible accident.

Six months later, Damien was on a business trip to the southern coast when a massive earthquake hit. The news was everywhere.
