Story

The story

After a catastrophic hemorrhage in the delivery room, Mia survives, but she overhears her mother-in-law, Martha, on the phone in the hallway, coldly asking whether the five hundred thousand dollar dowry can be recovered if she dies. Her husband David's quick, hollow answers about the consent forms leave her doubting him too.

During her recovery, Martha haggles over a postpartum doula and rehab, while David sleeps in the guest room and posts online that both mother and son are safe and healthy. No one asks how Mia is doing, and she is left to care for the baby alone.

As the small cruelties pile up, Mia begins to see exactly what her life is worth to the family she married into.

Opening excerpt

The bleeding wouldn't stop.

I lay on the delivery bed, the overhead lights blindingly white. Someone shouted, "More pressure!" I could hear running, the sound of shoes squeaking frantically against the linoleum floor.

My consciousness was sinking.

I couldn't feel the pain anymore. Just cold. A deep, creeping cold starting from the soles of my feet.

The delivery room door wasn't shut completely. Voices drifted in from the hallway.

It was my mother-in-law, Martha.

She was on the phone.
