Story

The story

Winda has died ninety-nine times at the hands of her husband, Tristan Jagger. The latest death came when he pushed her in front of a truck to protect Diana, his pregnant first love, then ordered her thrown into the trunk of the car. Each time Winda returns, she apologizes—to Diana, for the nausea, for the blood, for existing—while Tristan watches without flinching and bends her life further around Diana's comfort.

One death remains. Winda knows that after a hundred deaths at his hands, her karmic debt will be cleared and she will ascend beyond this world, free of earthly love. So when Diana offers her a mango she is deathly allergic to, Winda eats it without hesitation, only for Tristan to force it from her mouth and lock her away. He has a lab that wants to study her body for Diana's child, and he will not let her die. But Winda has already decided this death will be her last.

Opening excerpt

My husband had killed me ninety-nine times.

The most recent time, he pushed me in front of an oncoming truck—to save his beloved first love.

Casually, he told someone to throw me in the trunk.

“Diana’s pregnant. She can’t stand the smell of blood. Don’t let her see too much of it.”

“You’d better keep it under control—don’t die in our car.”

I didn’t say a word. Just curled up in the trunk, waiting to die.

Someone tried to stop him. He shrugged.

“She’s died ninety-eight times. Every time she wakes up, she just apologizes.”
