The story

Six years after their breakup, Aubrey runs into her ex-boyfriend Caleb at a college reunion, where he publicly announces his engagement to Brianna, a younger alumna. The room expects Aubrey, once head over heels for him, to cause a scene—but she stays calm and even gives the couple a generous gift. Caleb pulls her aside, insisting the engagement is only to help Brianna handle her parents and that he will marry Aubrey once it is over.

Aubrey refuses to be drawn back in. She reminds him they ended things six years ago, when his choices cost her their unborn child and she left the country. When Caleb grabs her arm, he discovers the wedding ring on her finger, and she tells him she has a husband and child waiting.

Caleb reels in disbelief, while Brianna sneers that the ring must be fake and feigns a sudden headache to hold him back as Aubrey walks away.

Opening excerpt

The entire private room was waiting for me—his ex-girlfriend—to cause a scene.

But I didn't argue or make a fuss. I even gave them a thousand-dollar gift.

Caleb, however, lowered his voice and explained:

"It's been six years—haven't you had enough drama? I'm just helping Brianna handle her parents; once this is over, I'll marry you."

But later, when he found out I was already married with a child, he broke down in tears, begging desperately for me to take him back.
