Story

The story

Sarah is a top lawyer who defends a murderer and wins an acquittal, never knowing the victim was her own daughter. She never liked Lily, calling her a vixen and accusing her of stealing and scheming. On Lily's eighteenth birthday, a message from Sarah lures her to North Forest Mountain with the promise of a surprise. Lily waits until the last bus leaves, then a killer finds her in the dark. She runs, silencing Sarah's ringtone so her mother won't come, and dies in the mud, full of anticipation.

Her soul drifts home, watching Sarah return to Happy Community, where a neighbor girl offers her a candy and a birthday greeting. Sarah pats the child's head and calls her a little fairy, kindness she never gave Lily. Lily can only pass through her mother's back, unseen and unable to hug her, remembering every scolding and every empty seat at the parent-teacher meetings.

Opening excerpt

She defended a murderer, turning a death sentence into an acquittal.

She didn't know the victim was her own daughter.

Mom never liked me. She called me a vixen, saying I'd cry to gain men's sympathy.

On my 18th birthday, I went out waiting for the surprise mom mentioned.

What I got was a killer.

Later, that star lawyer went insane.

On my 18th birthday, a message lured me to a desolate mountain.

It was from mom.

"5 PM, North Forest Mountain. A surprise awaits you."

I was overjoyed, dressing up carefully before heading out.

Mom had never liked me and rarely came to see me.
