Story

The story

For seven years, Tess has been married to James Tennant under a contract that will expire in one week. He has kept twenty-nine mistresses, and now he brings the thirtieth, Claire Fisher, into their bedroom, ordering Tess to fetch her clothes and watch as he fawns over the younger woman.

When Claire deliberately mimics the first love James can never forget, he softens, taking her shopping and ignoring Tess entirely. At the boutique, Claire shoves Tess into a mirror, then blames her; James carries Claire away to the hospital, leaving Tess bleeding among the glass. Even there, he pulls the anesthesiologist away for Claire, and Tess endures the shards removed without a sound.

Yet Tess has spent those seven years secretly writing code under an anonymous handle, waiting for the contract to end. Only seven days remain.

Opening excerpt

I turned to him and asked coldly, “Can’t get enough out there, huh? Did you really have to bring her home?”

The girl deliberately tugged her towel lower, her pale skin showing as she sneered, “Mr. Tennant says you’re like a dead corpse in bed! He wanted me to teach you how to please a man.”

That night, I was forced to watch their little performance right in front of me.

The next morning, James was furious at my indifference, resenting me for not reacting.
