Story

The story

Serena Whitmore scores 699 on the English exam her father Richard sets as a new rule for the Fortune 500 branch he manages. She is rejected. A year later her adopted sister Vanessa passes the same process, and at the celebration banquet David Lambert lets slip that Richard scrapped the rule once Vanessa fell short. When Serena confronts him, Richard insists he was only avoiding accusations of nepotism, and a thrown glass splits her forehead.

Serena leaves home, cut off from the family that chose Vanessa over its own daughter. Then she learns the truth from her ex-boyfriend Leo Mason: Vanessa's word alone secured him the offer he could never have earned, the same door that was slammed in Serena's face.

Serena has ranked first in the provincial civil service exams and holds a post at the IRS. When she audits her father's company at year-end, she intends to show no bias at all.

The year I applied to the Fortune 500 branch managed by my father, a new stipulation appeared overnight: an English proficiency score of 700.

I scored 699. I was rejected.

One year later, my adopted sister Vanessa breezed through the same process.

At the celebration banquet I hosted for her, David Lambert clapped my father on the shoulder, his face flushed with drink.
