Story

The story

At an industry summit, Olivia delivers a speech titled “My Ten Years,” promising her husband Ethan special thanks. Instead, she projects photos of him in an apron frying fish and kneeling to scrub a toilet, while the audience laughs and whispers that he is the man who lives off her. For ten minutes she turns his cooking, cleaning and childcare into business case studies, calling him a burden and a negative asset to be subtracted from her path.

Ethan, who gave up his career five years ago so Olivia could focus on work and raise their daughter Ellie, walks out humiliated. At home she dismisses his hurt as an example for the speech and tells him to grow up. Alone in his study, he opens a dusty box holding his college programming medal and an old phone, and finds a message from Jordan Blake, founder of Abyss Technologies, offering him a place. Ethan calls, and Jordan, overjoyed, sends him a core security vulnerability to examine.

Days later Ethan sends back a patch and analysis, and five million dollars arrives. He now sees how laughable his years of sacrifice have been.

The night before, she had said she would be giving me special thanks today.

I secretly wondered if she might put up an intimate photo of the two of us.

Then the first picture appeared.
