Story
The story
To marry Connor, Jane severed all ties with her family. Her father struck her name from the family records, and her mother declared she no longer had a daughter. Jane did not regret it. Then, on the night of their engagement dinner at the Plaza Hotel, with two hundred guests waiting, Connor never appeared. A trending post revealed he had married his childhood sweetheart, Fiona, three days earlier.
Left with two dollars and a locked door, Jane calls the mother she has not spoken to in three years. Her father had heart bypass surgery last month; nobody told her. At the apartment she shared with Connor, Fiona's slippers, mug and clothes have already replaced her own, and Connor asks her to sleep in the guest room for a few days. Fiona arrives to collect her things and tells Jane the engagement was only for show, to please Connor's ailing grandmother.
When Jane notices the silver bracelet her mother gave her on Fiona's wrist, she finally asks where it came from.
Opening excerpt
1
To marry Connor, I severed all ties with my family.
My father struck my name off the family records right in front of my eyes.
My mother slapped me across the face, declaring that from that day on, she no longer had a daughter.
I didn't regret it.
Our engagement dinner was set for the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel. Two hundred invitations had been sent out. Dressed in a rented gown that pinched my waist, I waited for three hours.
He never showed up.
