Forensic pathologist Curt Baxter once falsified the autopsy of his murdered wife, Millie Sullivan, to shield her killer, Bernice Barnes—the student he later married. Ten years on, a masked kidnapper seizes Bernice and broadcasts a demand: the March 18 Case, the killer permitted no plea, death by a thousand cuts. Curt is named as the accomplice, with three hours to surrender.

Dragged into an interrogation room, Curt insists he is an ex-husband, that Millie was delusional, and that his autopsy was honest. Yet the kidnapper knows about the forged report, and Millie's restless ghost follows him, watching him bargain for the woman carrying his child while the Forensics Unit races to trace the signal.
