Story
The story
For three years, Vivian has taken one birth control pill after another, believing Torres's promise that after the 150th he would marry her. When she swallows the last one, he only laughs: Anna, his first love, is returning, and Vivian must pack her things and leave his villa. So she sets the villa on fire, determined to erase every trace of herself.
Vivian once took Anna's place because Torres offered money she needed for her mother's cancer treatment, and over the years she came to love him. Now he parades her in a bikini at Anna's party and threatens her mother's surgery to keep her obedient, while Anna, her half-sister, watches with a satisfied smile.
After a fever and a devastating diagnosis, Vivian must face what her gamble on Torres's love has truly cost her.
Opening excerpt
After half an hour of sex, Torres handed me a birth control pill, as usual.
"Take it now. Don't cause me any trouble."
I took it and swallowed it skillfully.
"This is the 150th time. You promised that after I took 150 pills, you'd marry me."
He looked surprised, then seemed to remember something. He lifted my chin with his fingertip.
His tone was frivolous.
"Vivian, how can you take pillow talk seriously? Anna's coming back from abroad today. Pack your things and move out. I don't want her to see any trace of you."
After he left, I sat on the edge of the bed in silence for a long time.
