Story
The story
Will Harding plans a pre-wedding road trip for himself and June Winfield, but at the first rest stop he drives off without her. When he finally answers, it is June's best friend Bertha Roman on the line, saying Will turned around to come get her. A post from Will's account shows Bertha complaining about being left out, and Will promising to come back for her.
June has spent a year and a half coaxing Will into this trip, yet he cannot remember her mango allergy or buy her the iced tea she likes, while Bertha slips into the passenger seat and into his plans without effort. The destination itself was chosen for Bertha, not for June.
At the town below the mountain, June buys a ticket to a different destination and leaves the ski gear in the trunk. When Will goes to bring Bertha hand warmers and stays away for two hours, June decides the two of them can enjoy the day without her.
Opening excerpt
The first stop on our road trip, just the two of us.
I got thirsty and went into the rest area to buy water, and when I came back, Will Harding had driven off.
I called him ten times. Every call went straight to silence.
An hour later he finally picked up, and the voice on the line was my best friend's.
"Sorry, Junie. Will just turned around to come get me. We're on the highway now, we'll reach your rest stop in an hour, tops."
I hung up and saw that the post I'd made earlier from Will's account, before we left, had a flood of new comments.
