Story

The story

Tim Vanderbilt keeps asking his wife Cora for a divorce. Each time, a young mistress demands a ring and a title, and each time Tim promises Cora they will remarry once he tires of the girl. She signs the papers, and the alimony lands in her offshore accounts. This is the one-hundredth divorce, and Cora's secret fear is that Tim might one day stop being so impulsive.

After filing in Manhattan, Tim hands her the Hamptons estate and swears this is the last time. Cora feigns heartbreak while quietly selling every property he signs over, and the brokers who handle both his purchases and her sales know his habits well. Margot, Tim's adopted sister, calls demanding to know whether the papers are real, eager to claim him for herself.

As Tim brushes her jaw and repeats his promise, Cora keeps her face broken and her fortune growing.

The excuse this time? His newest little pet is throwing a tantrum for a ring and a title. She’s young, he tells me, his tone practically bleeding with faux sympathy. Too fragile to be kept in the shadows.
