Story

The story

Maude Ellington has spent five years with Orson Winfield, who seems the perfect fiancé: he cooks around her sensitive stomach, meets her after work, and tends her through every cold. Yet when his childhood sweetheart Imogen Fenwick returns, Maude learns the truth — Orson proposed out of obligation, telling Imogen she was always the one he wanted to marry. She quietly reapplies for the overseas assignment she once refused for him.

As Orson plans their wedding with Imogen in mind, Maude watches him rush to Imogen's side, choose her dress, and let Imogen move into the home he once bought for Maude. Each kindness to Imogen cuts deeper, and Maude says only that it is fine.

Her flight is confirmed for the day that should have been their wedding. With fourteen days left, Maude counts down to a departure Orson knows nothing about.

Opening excerpt

Maude Ellington's fiance sends a message to his first love before their wedding.

"You've always been the one I wanted to marry."

With their wedding fast approaching, Maude watches him meticulously plan every detail with his first love in mind.

She quietly lets it all go.

Because she no longer wants the wedding.

And she no longer wants him.

"Hello, I'd like to reapply for the overseas assignment."
