Story
The story
On the night Alpha Thorne announces his engagement to Vespera, Elara kneels on a club floor, scrubbing, a fatal dose of Wolfsbane already in her veins. Thorne steps on her hand and tells her she belongs in the gutter, atoning. He does not know these hands were ruined digging through rubble to pull him out, nor that the woman he despises has only three months to live.
To celebrate Vespera's return, Thorne books the penthouse lounge and demands Elara serve drinks in a revealing outfit, threatening her brother Orion's hospital care if she refuses. When wine splatters Vespera's dress, Thorne kicks Elara down and orders ten bottles of moongrass extract forced down her throat, lethal to a body in late-stage Wolfsbane poisoning. She coughs up blood, and Vespera calls it a trick. Thorne sentences her to kneel all night, warning that Orion's respirator will be turned off if she falters.
Elara kneels alone on the cold floor, clutching a lab report marked late stage, and wonders who truly owes whom a life.

"And you? You belong in the gutter, atoning."
I bit down, swallowing the coppery sweetness in my throat. I said nothing.
He didn't know these hands had already been ruined, digging through rubble for three days and nights to pull him…
