Story

The story

Renee Gilbert has built her company from the ground up, and when her mother-in-law calls in the night to say her father-in-law Stuart Fox is dying and needs millions for surgery and medication, Renee mortgages two properties and empties every savings account she has. But the money vanishes—transferred by her husband, Mortimer Fox, who insists he gave it to Renata Matthews as seed funding for a confidential company project. Finance has no record of any such request, only three hundred thousand dollars Mortimer approved for a team-building event.

At Stuart's hospital bed, his wife Beverly Fox calls their son, but Mortimer dismisses the news as a lie Renee invented to claw the money back, even as Stuart coughs up blood and is moved to the ICU. Mortimer's phone goes off, and Renee makes a hard decision: sell the company she spent years building for eighteen million dollars to cover the treatment.

With a buyer ready and the paperwork days away, Renee tells Beverly that a company can be rebuilt but a person cannot—and that saving Stuart comes first.

Opening excerpt

"Renee, your father-in-law has a terminal illness. The doctors say surgery and specialized medication are the only way to keep him alive."

When I learned the total cost would run into the millions, I mortgaged two properties that same night and emptied every savings account I had.

I planned to visit him at the hospital the next day.

Instead, I discovered that every cent I'd raised had been transferred out—by my husband.

"Renata told me the company was short on research funding. I gave it all to her."

I confronted him. "Do you have any idea what that money was for? It's to save your father's life.
