Story
The story
When an earthquake brings a house down, a wife is left trapped beneath the rubble while her husband, Andrew, spends a fortune to rescue his first love, Gillian. She survives, but the rescue that makes him famous is the one he performed for another woman. In the same hospital ward, she watches him feed Gillian, tend her wounds, and book her a private room, while her own bandages go unchanged and her water glass stays out of reach. He forgets he has a wife, even though she was buried because she saved him.
Then Andrew asks her to be a bridesmaid at his wedding to Gillian, using the compensation from her parents' death to pay for it. He says he loves her, yet he plans a ceremony grander than their own. She agrees to attend, and on the wedding day she takes the stage with a surprise: Gillian's first love, William Johnson, alive and invited as the best man.
Opening excerpt
I was left in the rubble, waiting for death.
But I survived.
He said he cares about me, but he invited me to be his wedding bridesmaid with his first love.
On the day of the wedding, I dressed up.
I also brought his fianc é e's "long gone" boyfriend as a groomsman.
……
I was dug out, covered in broken glass.
The nurse was helping me clean up while wondering why my wounds looked like they were caused by an explosion.
I stayed silent.
