Story
The story
Before the semester begins, Brenda, Skylar's stepmother, breaks her leg to steal her college place for her son, Kyle. Brenda dumps Skylar in a suburban garage marked for authorized personnel only, telling her the men inside love little girls like her, then drives away. Greasy, tattooed men circle her until Jax, the scarred boss, kicks one back and has her carried inside, where Pops, a former black-market doctor, sets the bone.
Jax offers her a wrench and a choice: learn to fix cars, and later breaking people will come easier. He lets her stay to work off her medical bills, warning that stepping outside means her life is no longer their concern. As she heals, Skylar recalls how Brenda and her father, David, let Kyle take everything, and how they sacrificed her future.
When she asks why Jax saved her, he speaks of a sister her age whose grades were good too.

Before the semester started, my stepmom, Brenda, broke my leg to steal my college spot for her son, Kyle.
She dragged me to a garage in the suburbs with an "Authorized Personnel Only" sign.
"Skylar, the guys here love little girls like you. Just rot here."
With that, she drove off, leaving me behind.
A few greasy men, their arms covered in tattoos, circled me, their gazes menacing.
I closed my eyes in despair.
But Jax, the scarred man leading them, kicked away one of his subordinates who was getting too close.
