Goodbye to the Man Who Never Cared

Debbie Delgado's mother has only months left, and when Debbie reaches out to her boyfriend Ned Henson for comfort, all she gets back is a single "1." It is always the same: a fever, a plea for help finding a specialist, a fight about whether he still cares — every message answered with that one number. Yet Ned, a billionaire who books dates three days in advance, finds time to sit up all night revising a proposal with his junior secretary, Deidre Simmons.

When Debbie finally tells Ned she is done, the reply is still just "1." Then she comes home to find Deidre in a towel, holding a spare key to the apartment, casually sorting through Ned's clothes. Debbie retreats to the study and lets the tears come.

Her mother is gone, and the last chance to save her slipped away while Ned claimed his specialist had no openings — the same specialist he found for Deidre's mother overnight. Now Debbie must carry the urn home alone and decide what is left to hold on to.
