Story
The story
At Northwood High, Archer watches his childhood friend Hallie Miller throw away everything they built together. A transfer student named Cole claims he is a Player in a high-stakes simulation and that Hallie is his Objective: if he fails to capture her heart, he will be erased. Hallie believes him, abandoning her Ivy League dreams, her notes, and the pact she and Archer made in middle school.
Archer alone knows the truth. Cole is lying, and dating Hallie is only a bet between him and his lacrosse friends. In a previous life, Archer recorded Cole's confession and brought it to Hallie, but she stayed with Cole, and Cole made Archer pay, cornering him in the showers and threatening him until his exams and GPA collapsed. When Cole finally dumped Hallie, she blamed Archer and shoved him down, leaving him bleeding on the concrete.
Now Archer has lived it all again. He keeps his distance, says nothing, and lets Hallie and Cole walk away together. Cole has already won his game; Hallie's ante is her entire life. This time, it is no longer Archer's problem.
Opening excerpt
It started after school, right when the late afternoon sun hits the lockers and turns the dust motes into gold. The new transfer student cornered Hallie, blocking her path to the tutoring center where we’d spent every Tuesday since seventh grade.
He spun her a story that sounded like it was ripped from a bad sci-fi novel. He told her he was a "Player" in a high-stakes simulation, and she was his "Objective."
If he failed to capture her heart, he said, his existence would be wiped. Deleted.
Hallie believed him.
