Story

The story

A top special effects makeup artist is just back from an overseas project when a colleague begs her to cover a bridal shift. The bride, Chloe, is a self-styled influencer who demands to be made to look exactly like Anne Hathaway, refuses to hear professional advice, and sends her bridesmaids to pressure the artist for a free session.

When the artist explains that baking is a long-wear technique, Chloe shrieks that powder is being dumped on her face, and a bridesmaid shoves a tripod into the artist's forehead. Chloe then holds the photo beside her own reflection and accuses the artist of failing to reproduce the celebrity's nose, mouth, eyes and brows.

The artist insists she agreed only to imitate the makeup, not to sculpt a new face, and as Chloe's voice rises, she lunges at her.

Opening excerpt

The bride wanted me to make her look like Anne Hathaway.

I tried to gently dissuade her. "Replicating a celebrity's entire face for your wedding isn't usually recommended."

She took it as a challenge. "I'm paying, so I get what I want. What, you can't do it?"

As the top SFX makeup artist in my field, of course I could do it.

A tight, humorless smile stretched across my face. "Oh, I can do it. Let's get started."

I'm a makeup artist.
