Story

The story

Maeve has loved Travis since they were children on the same crumbling block, bringing him cold drinks and letting him take her lunch money. Then a voice through her cheap earbuds claims to be her future self, warning that tomorrow Travis will be arrested for a gang assault and sent to juvenile hall. It tells her to memorize vocabulary, bet her savings on a long-shot game, and walk away from him.

When Maeve refuses Travis's demands, he snatches her lunch card to buy cherries for Courtney, and his mother expects Maeve to fund his breakfast as always. At school he jams her notebook under his desk and leaves a switchblade in her bag, daring her to carry the blame for a fight he plans to start.

With her future self's warnings ringing in her ears, Maeve must decide whether to keep protecting the boy she grew up with or finally save herself.

The year of my most foolish, innocent love, I was sitting on the wooden bleachers by the basketball court, holding a cold drink for the boy I secretly adored.

Travis sunk a clean three-pointer, then turned and blew a cocky whistle in my direction.

My face burned hot. I was just about to stand up and hand him the bottle when a raspy, jarringly familiar voice crackled through my cheap wired earbuds.
