Story
The story
Austin brings her paralyzed childhood friend Glenn into the home she shares with Jackson, tending to him above all else and even demanding Jackson help bathe him. When Jackson later takes in Charlotte, a homeless disabled girl, Austin erupts, accusing him of bringing another woman into the house and ordering Charlotte gone.
Jackson stands his ground, bathing Charlotte, feeding her, and letting her wear Austin's pajamas. Glenn stokes every quarrel, playing the burdened guest while Austin comforts him and surrenders the master bedroom to him. Sunday, once reserved for Jackson, slips away when Glenn calls.
After Austin scalds Charlotte with hot soup, she declares it is either the girl or her, and threatens divorce.
Opening excerpt
Austin brought her childhood friend, Glenn, home to care for him after he was paralyzed, always prioritizing him above everything else.
She completely ignored my feelings, even forcing me to help him bathe.
Six months later, I took in a homeless, disabled girl.
"She has mental issues and no one to rely on. She'll be bullied out there, so I couldn't bear to leave her."
