Story

The story

On his first day at the company, Graham Chavez lets sympathy move him and hauls Isabella Lambert's water jugs up the stairs. She repays him by accusing him of assault in the elevator lobby's camera blind spot. The company fires him, his neighbors whisper, and his parents die of the shame. He follows them. Then he opens his eyes on that same first day.

This time he refuses her, and when she spins the same story to Mr. Dickerson, he stands his ground: she has no proof, and he will not be the one to leave. Her brother Irvin Lambert, who fears Graham for the single permanent-hire slot, walks in on the scene.

Isabella will not call the police. Graham will.

In my last life, on my first day at the company, the elevator was under repair. I let my sympathy get the better of me and hauled Isabella Lambert's water jugs up to the office. We'd been hired the same day.
