Story
The story
Every winter, Lea's husband Mark and their son Leo develop a violent rash whenever they come near her, so they move across town until spring. Alone, she has endured injuries and hospital stays without them, believing she is the sickness that drives her family away.
This year she overhears Leo ask his father whether the allergies can last longer, so he can keep seeing Momma Annie, Mark's first love. The winter mango candies Leo loves are the one thing he is deathly allergic to, and the secret sign of their meetings.
When spring returns them, Lea's warmth is gone. She tells Leo to eat what he wants and that she does not want custody, and Mark's panic over a single candy exposes the lie she has lived inside for years.
Opening excerpt
Winter is here again.
For three months every year, my husband, Mark, and our son, Leo, become allergic to me. It starts with the first frost—a mysterious, violent rash that blooms across their skin if they get too close. We’ve never found the source.
So, for the sake of their health, they leave. They move into another one of our properties across town, drawing a clean, sterile line between us.
They weren't there when I slipped on the ice last year and my head bled all over the pristine snow.
